Days 47 - 48 ~ Devil's Night and Halloween

A different way to spend the last two days of October

If you live in the mountains, you write your name on them

Typical rest stops out west with concrete Teepees

Red dirt mountains

Looks like the picture

The right place to spent Devil's Night

There is an old indian ledgend that says children were being chased by a bear and were protected when the tower shot up out of the ground in order to keep the bear at bay

We stopped back the next day to see the monument in the sun

Also toured the museum to see how they built it

Initially the carving was to be from the waist up

Mini at the Monument

Not sure why they are the Black Hills as they are more Green than Black

The monument is in Keystone, SD a very cute old westrern town

Downtown Keystone, SD

Cool tunnels

An inquisitive buck

On our way to Minute Man Missile site

Some of the landscape looks like carpet

See the ink quill in the sky

It was neat to be able to see the remnants of the Cold War

Remember this?

The Minute Man control buildings were scattered around ND, SD, NE, MT, WY, CO & MO

High Impact Antennas

Control room

The Minute Man Guarantee

Old liquid fuel rocket on right, new solid fuel Minute Man rocket on left.

The guarantee is written on the 3' thick door to the control capsule

The buried control capsule that controlled every 10 rockets dispersed in a wagon wheel layout.

The buried capsule walls were 4' thick reinforced concrete sandwiched between 1" steel plates

Patrol truck that drove around the sites.

100 of these these sites were scattered through 5 western states in plain site, though few realized it.

The actual silos were a few miles away ringed around the control bldg.

The retractable 40 ton concrete cover is now replaced with a skylight to view missile

The only thing that separated you from the Minute man silos was a chain-link fence

Entering Wall, SD

Not sure why Wall Drug, SD is so popular so we had to stop

It was a cute little western town

With an "Old" telephone booth complete with working phone

And some cute stores

And some cute shoppers too

And some cute cowgirls

And some cute cars...

Rest stops with concrete teepee structures

See the helmet-less teddy bear?

And a few more pictures of the "Boys"

This time in the sun

Pretty cool

Rackin up the miles

Our tour guide was from Ohio State

Its soo dry here it almost looks like the desert

Another beautiful Sunset on the plains of Nebraska

And Pink clouds too

Almost time for Trick-or-Treaters
Only one state left ... except Alaska
